Makrolon Polycarbonate Window Care & Maintenance

Your new Makrolon AR2 polycarbonate windows offer an outstanding optical experience!  The substantial .060 thick material has superior optical clarity, with no wrinkles, no distortion.

Besides offering UV, abrasion, and yellowing resistance, the special protective hardcoat technology on both sides of these windows offers protection against the abrasion, chemical, and UV attacks common in today's harsh marine environment. It is highly resistant to common chemicals that would damage other materials, including acid rain & industrial fallout. Polycarbonate also has 250 times the impact strength of float glass and 30 times that of acrylic.

With proper care, you will receive years of high-performance service, style, and protection. But the right care is extremely important! The key to long life is to protect the hard coating on both sides of the window.

Do:

·         Do wash windows regularly with clear water, removing abrasive salt crystals first by spraying down windows. Your polycarbonate windows should be washed whenever your boat is washed.

·         Do wash only with mild boat soap or mild detergent, lukewarm water, and an appropriate washing mitt or soft cotton cloth. Beware of washing with trapped grit in your cloth! Rinse cloth well during and after washing.

·         Do use cleaner & polish periodically with a dedicated soft cloth to keep a light protective film on the window surface. Don’t over-polish; it will wear down the protective hard coating.

·         Do dry with a soft cloth or chamois to prevent water spots if windows are easily accessible. Use of a boat wash with sheeting action will reduce the need for hand drying.

·         Do keep your window covers (if equipped) on when boat is not is use.

·         Do use a snap tool to remove the canvas whenever possible, to reduce unnecessary strain on the fabric/fastener and possible premature “pull-out”, especially as fasteners become corroded with age. Be sure anyone removing the panels for you exercises appropriate care as well.

Don’t:

·         Don’t use paper towels, brushes, squeegees, scrapers, or other items that might scratch or damage the coating.

·         Don’t let bird droppings or other stains remain long- they can etch or stain the windows.

·         Avoid using harsh abrasive, highly alkaline, or ammonia-based  cleaners,  polishes, or scratch removers, or Rainex

·         Careful applying cleaners in direct sunlight or at elevated temperatures, wash off promptly after application.

·         Try not to handle the windows with sunscreen, hand creams, or other oily substances on your hands.

·         Don’t bend the windows tightly; it can cause micro-cracks in the coating that are not covered by warranty!

Notes & Tips:

·         To minimize fine or hairline scratches, use mild automotive polish applied and removed with a soft, clean cloth. Do not use harshly abrasive plastic polishes.

·         You will not be able to restore the finish if it is severely damaged… maintain it correctly from the beginning!

·         Remember: don’t bend the window through a tight radius or pinch it; the protective coating can craze, and the material can show a permanent “dimple” if creased.

·         Fabric window covers (optional) are always beneficial to extend the life of your windows by preventing UV damage while not in use.

·         Suggested washing solutions include: Quality boat wash soaps such IMAR, Mermaids , etc., or most mild detergents (Joy, Woolite, Palmolive Liquid, etc;  NOT Simple Green or harsh cleaners)

·         Suggested polishes/cleaners include: Plexus,  210 Products, Mermaids, Collonite, Johnson Paste Wax, Novus Plastic Polish #1, and Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze #10 Plastic Polish (see us for these)
